- events in 1960 show growth of the borough , bronx
- freedomland was difficult to get to with out a car.
- only one bus line to freedomland , last stop
- freedomland has financial problems since it was constructed
- the rides at freedomland are very slow at a 19th century pace. Older amusement parks have faster rollercoasters and rides that make people dizzy.
- the park shut down 1964 , four years after it was constructed , when it faced a serious cempetition from the World Fair in Flushing in Queens.
For essay , think about what does freedomland has, they talk about US history events and achivements. they talk about expanding horizion to the west and other historical events. think about what kind of park it is , why dont they show the trail of tears or the pushing of the native americans or slavery. they do this to convince that the US is better then the Soviet Union. Cold war is going on , and many events happened in 1960.
Essay: In the 1960's , many events occurred. John F Kennedy announced he will be running for president, Soviet Union launches Sputnik 4 into space, France first testes nuclear bombs and the Soviet Union and the United States are involved in the Cold War. Meanwhile all of this is happening, a new amusement park in the Bronx, New York is being constructed. This amusement park is called Freedomland. Creating Freedomland had its reasons for being created. Freedomland was created to show and prove how good of a country the United States is even though they do not speak about the bad things that happened like Slavery and when the Federal Government pushed the Native Americans off of their land. Freedomland told history but had missing pieces that were neglected to be included. Freedomland seemed like a fun , interesting place to go but Freedomland did not last too long. The closure of Freedomland had many causes but the lack of popular interest was the main one.
Freedomland had an American history theme. The park had reenactments of big historical events like the Chicago Fire and San Francisco Earthquake. Freedomland also had 26 other attractions. While the park was still opened, a beauty pageant was held. Several women walked down a runway modeling clothing and bathing suits. Many people gathered around and watched as the women walked. This caught many people attention. Also, to attract people, concerts that were held. These concerts were mainly for teens to enjoy the music and become interested in the park.
One problem of Freedomland happened before Freedomland opened. At the site where Freedomland was constructed, before Freedomland was there, a fire broke out on March 24, 1960. Three-alarm fire destroyed six small unfinished buildings that were a part of Freedomland. The cause of the fire was not determined. A half mile long relay of hose lines were used to get water from a nearby fire hydrant. There was no one hurt or injured. ("Fire at Freedomland" March 24,1960)
Another problem that Freedomland faced was Transportation. Transportation was difficult for those who did not own cars to go to Freedomland. The park was located between Hutchinson River Parkway and New England Thruway. While Freedomland was still open, there was only one bus route that people were able to take to Freedomland ,which was the last stop of the bus. The park planned to opened a motel for visitors to visit and stay at Freedomland so they could come in car and stay at Freedomland. (Ultan, pages 282, 283)
Freedomland tried many things to attract more people to the park. To bring more people to Freedomland, the company that owned Freedomland, Webb and Knapp Inc. , constructed a Motel and a Restaurant. Webb and Knapp Inc., were charged with liens from several companies like Controlled Weather Corporation, Turner Construction Company, Aberthaw Construction Company, and Capitol Steel Corporation which were companies that helped construct the motel and the restaurant. Webb and Knapp Inc., were charged with these liens because they failed to pay for the work that these companies did for the park. In total, Webb and Knapp Inc. owed over $ 8 million in debt by the second season Freedomland was open. As a result of this, Freedomland filed for bankruptcy and was closed in 1964. ("Freedomland U.S.A : Failure and Demolition" )
The main reason why Freedomland closed was because of the lack of popular interest. Freedomland tried many things to grab a hold of people’s attention but the park itself was not interesting. The rides which were the main attractions were very slow, nineteenth century rides. Other amusement parks had rides that were much faster and left people coming back again and again (Ultan, pages 282, 283). Freedomland's attempt to create a motel was not successful because even before the motel, less and less people came to the park. If there were no people to stay at the motel, the motel would be useless.
The park got attention from the extra events held at the park but they were not part of American history. To attract more people , the park lost some of its American history theme that was not so successful to bring more visitors. Eventually, Freedomland had to remodel the theme of the park to bring more people.
Freedomland had numerous numbers of issues and problems that it had to face. The park was torn down in 1965 after it filed for bankruptcy. The site where Freedomland used to be is now a large residential development called Co-op City and the Bay Plaza Shopping center. Freedomland had very low popular interest and that is why it closed down. In addition, Freedomland tried too hard to attract new people and ended up having to close down for the deep debt the company Webb and Knapp Inc., which was the owners of Freedomland, had to face with.
